The biggest animal in the ocean and in the world

The blue whale is the largest mammal in the world and the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth. Calf weight of two tons (1814 kilograms) at birth and gain about 200 pounds (91 kg) every day during the first year of their lives.

Blue whales breathe air, but they are at home in the water, where buoyancy helps to support their massive bulk.

These mammals are found in all oceans of the world, swim in small groups or alone. They often spend summers feeding in polar waters, and perform a long migration towards the equator as winter arrives. Migration is often seen in the blue whales off the coast of California and Mexico.

This is a baleen whale, and feeds through the filter comblike than 400 plates equipped with feathers to trap small pieces of food as the whale swimming. An adult blue whale can eat some 4 to 8 tons (3.6 to 7.3 metric tons) of krill per day.

Only a few thousand blue whales are believed to swim the oceans of the world. For years they were aggressively hunted for blubber and oil, and their numbers reduced drastically. In 1930-'31 season alone, hunters kill nearly 30,000 whales blue whale. They eventually came under the protection by the International Whaling Convention 1966.
